Wearing & Training Tips

Training Tips: Social Referencing

Your dog will also take cues from you in how to react.  If you believe the PAWNIX will work, and is providing your dog much needed comfort, then your dog will react to you being calm, and be calm as well.   If you do not think that PAWNIX will work for your dogs, and are at your wits end, then your dog will pick up on this and also be stressed out.

Think of it like a kid that falls and looks to see if anyone is watching.  If there is a big production of emotions to their fall, they will begin to cry.  If the parent or guardian provides soothing calming comfort, then the child doesn't react with tears.

Our pups need help getting over the social and physical programing that they have been dealing with, and deserve to be comforted by you and PAWNIX.

How Do You Train a Dog to Accept Their PAWNIX?

The first time you put a PAWNIX on your PUP, should not be the first time you need to put one on. If your dog’s first introduction to wearing a PAWNIX happens when he/she is hurt or terrified, it will be much more difficult to get the PAWNIX on. And harder to use and benefit from the PAWNIX in the future, as your dog will have learned to associate the PAWNIX with the stressful circumstances. Luckily, a dog can be trained to accept PAWNIX if he/she is introduced to it under low-stress conditions, with a step-by-step process, and with appropriate rewards and love.

Using small, soft treats, and making sure they are comfortable with each step before going on to the next.

  1. Let them sniff the PAWNIX. Give a treat. Repeat a few times.
  2. Touch their nose with the PAWNIX. Treat. Repeat until they indicate that the PAWNIX looks interesting in a good way.
  3. Hold the PAWNIX with one hand and a treat with the other hand (inside the PAWNIX), so they needs to put their nose inside the PAWNIX to get the treat. Repeat until this step is no big deal.
  4. Gently slip the PAWNIX over their head, and give them a treat. Remove the PAWNIX after they have finished the treat. Repeat a few times.
  5. Put on the PAWNIX and sinch the elastic strings. Treat. Remove after they have finished the treat. Loosen the elastic strings I needed to get back on their head. Repeat a few times.
  6. Put on the PAWNIX, sinch the elastic strings, and count slowly to five. Treat. Remove the PAWNIX after they have finished their treat.
  7. Put on the PAWNIX, sinch the elastic strings, and count slowly to five. Treat.  Count slowly to five after they have finished their treat, and Remove the PAWNIX.

Each time you put on the PAWNIX, gradually increase the time the PAWNIX is on. SIt with them and give treats.

Some dogs have gone through these steps in less than a day—possibly a matter of minutes. Some dogs have really bad PTSD and may take training over several days to keep it on and see the benefits. We’ve done this with all kinds of dogs, including rescue dogs we’ve fostered. If the dog isn’t interested in treats, you can substitute other rewards. We have used verbal praise, but this is optional.

We also suggest that you try introducing and training around nap/sleep time as well.  This lets your dog know it is ok to fall asleep in their PAWNIX.  This will help you all get back to sleep in the middle of the night quickly.

What if our PAWNIX is falling forward or backward?

The electronics are removable when you turn the headset inside out. They are housed in pockets, and are easier to access when the headset is inside out. We originally did this in case you needed to hand clean the headset, but it works very well for size swaps too! https://pawnix.com/pages/put-back-in

If the headphones are slipping backwards, you can push them backwards to leave more room at the front of the headset to pinch the hoodie elastic around the face more.

If they are falling forward, moving the speakers back can also help balance the weight on the head.

They are also moveable for comfort and placement in, on or in front of the ear.

The velcro loops are also helpful to secure to the collar to help prevent the PAWNIX from wobbling around on the head.

Please reach out to us if none of these tips work in case we need to reevaluate the size that your pup has received. We provide free swap-outs in sizing.   pawnix@pawnix.com

What to listen to:

We have also created a 4 your pup - listening recommendation page (click here)

We recommend pairing your PAWNIX with a tablet, Ipad, or smart home device.   This way your PUP will have less notifications from your phone to deal with.  We noticed text messages and weather alerts bothering our own Emma, and wanted to share our learning with you!

Having Volume Trouble?  IOS and Andriods now have VOLUME LIMITERS since the manufacturing of PAWNIX.  With PAWNIX, this puts DOUBLE volume constraints so that you cannot hear the music after pairing.  Please review and remove the limiter off of your device, since that is the device that controls the volume to the PAWNIX speakers. When testing use music with voices, when playing for your dog, we recommend classical with no percussion, or reggae.  No percussion makes the volume incredibly soft. So when you are testing the system for the first time yourself, put on some vocals & put one of the speakers on your ear and sing along with your device at max volume.
